  66. Malasians.  There is also another large group whose ancestors
  67. are people of Chinese and Spanish origin.  The population of

  72. (spelled differently from the country name).  The Phillipinos
  73. have strong family values.  They value the opinion of their
  74. relatives and friends.  Education is also very important to them.

  87.      For fun and entertainment the Phillippine people enjoy
  88. music and dancing.  They have many great bands and a rich
  89. history of folk dancing and folk sports.  They play a game called
  90. 'arnis'.  A kind of fencing with wooden sticks.  They also play
  91. 'sipa'
  92. very popular.  The Phillipino women are thought of as equals to
  93. the men.  There are many women who hold high positions in
  94. businesses.  There is a good system of roads and railways in the
  95. Philippines.  There is a major airport there and the country has
  96. many seaports

  109. THE MAKEUP OF THE LAND

  111.      The islands of the Philippines are from volcanos.  They
  112. have a lot of mountains.  Earthquakes happen very often.  They
  113. still have about 20 active volcanos.  One third of the land can be
  114. used for farming.  The rest of it is too rocky or has too much
  115. coral limestone to farm on.  The main river of the country is the
  116. Cagayan.  Other important rivers include the Chico
  117. Pampanga and the Bicol.  There are many plants and trees in the
  118. forest and wooded areas.  One of the most valuable plants is the
  119. abaca
  120. clothing and hats.

  135.      The Phillippine Islands are in the Tropics and have an
  136. average annual temperature of about 80 degrees F.  The valleys
  137. are warmer than the mountainous area.  Rainfall averages about
  138. 80 inches a year.  The rainy season occurs during the summer
  139. months from May to November.  The dry season occurs during
  140. the winter months

  142. which can cause great damage (like our hurricanes).

  159.      Mining is a big industry in the Philippines.  They mine for
  160. gold
  161. The Philippines do a lot of manufacturing.  They manufacture
  162. clothing items
  163. make furniture
  164. transportation equipment.  They manufacture chemicals for
  165. farming and industry.  About 43% of the working population is
  166. engaged in farming.  The most important crops are rice
  167. cassava
  168. and tobacco.  Fruit crops include bananas
  169. pineapples
  170. water buffalo
  171. is also an important industry.  They catch milkfish
  172. anchovy
  173. sponges off the southern islands.  Forestry is another important
  174. industry.  They cut bamboo and rattan especially for making
  175. furniture and baskets.

  205. MY OPINION
  206.  
  207.      I found the Philippines to be a very interesting country.  It
  208. is much different than the United States.  It's climate seems to be
  209. a little like ours here in Florida though.  I have a good friend
  210. whose mother and she are from the Philippines.  They visit there
  211. every year.  I learned a lot about the Philippines.  I didn't know
  212. the people came from a Spanish and Chinese background.
